Dreaming of Bali? Make Sure Your Visa Doesn’t Ruin Your Holiday

Every week we receive messages from travelers asking the same question:

Some want to spend two weeks surfing in Canggu. Others plan to work remotely for several months while exploring Bali, Lombok, and Flores. Many simply want to escape the winter and enjoy Indonesia’s tropical lifestyle.

The problem is that choosing the wrong visa can lead to unnecessary expenses, stressful immigration issues, or even being forced to leave the country earlier than planned.

After helping thousands of international visitors over the years, we’ve noticed that most visa problems begin long before travelers arrive in Indonesia. They simply don’t know which visa fits their travel plans. That’s exactly why we created this guide.

In this article, we’ll explain every tourist visa available for Indonesia in simple English, so you can choose the right one before booking your flight.

Visa-Free Entry – Perfect for Short Holidays

If your nationality qualifies for Indonesia’s Visa Exemption program, entering Indonesia is incredibly easy. There is no visa application and no visa fee. Simply arrive, pass immigration, and begin your holiday. However, many travelers don’t realize there is one important limitation.

Your stay is limited to 30 days, and it cannot be extended.

B1 Visa on Arrival – Indonesia’s Most Popular Tourist Visa ( If you think there’s even a small chance you’ll want to stay longer, this probably isn’t the best option ).

For most international visitors, the B1 Visa on Arrival (VOA or e-VOA) is the easiest and most flexible choice. It’s ideal if you’re planning a holiday in Bali, visiting friends, or exploring several Indonesian islands over a few weeks. You’ll receive 30 days, with the option to extend once for another 30 days, allowing a total stay of 60 days. Applying is straightforward.

Normally you’ll only need:

  • A passport valid for at least six months
  • A return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds if requested
  • Payment of the visa fee

C1 Tourist Visa – Stay Longer, Explore More ( If your holiday lasts less than two months, this visa is usually the perfect solution ).

Some people visit Indonesia for much more than a quick vacation.

  • Maybe you’re working remotely from Bali.
  • Maybe you want to surf for an entire season.
  • Or perhaps you’ve simply fallen in love with Indonesia and don’t want to leave after just one month.

That’s exactly why the C1 Tourist Visa exists. Instead of receiving only 30 days, you’ll begin with 60 days, and the visa can be extended twice, allowing you to stay up to 180 days without leaving Indonesia.

For many of our international clients, this is the most comfortable option because it gives them the freedom to truly enjoy life in Indonesia without constantly worrying about visa deadlines.

Typical documents include:

  • Passport (minimum six months validity)
  • Passport photo
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Recent bank statement
  • Additional supporting documents when required

D1 Multiple Entry Visa – Designed for Frequent Travelers

Do you visit Indonesia several times every year? If your answer is yes, constantly applying for new visas quickly becomes inconvenient. The D1 Multiple Entry Visa was created for exactly this situation.

Whether you’re an investor, business owner, property owner, or someone who simply loves spending time in Bali, this visa allows you to enter and leave Indonesia multiple times during its validity. Each visit allows you to stay up to 60 days, with extension options available under current immigration regulations. For people who travel frequently between Australia, Singapore, Dubai, Europe, or other countries, the D1 Visa is often the smartest long-term choice.

Before You Apply…

Regardless of which visa you choose, preparing your documents in advance will make the application process much smoother.

Most applicants should prepare:

✓ Passport valid for at least six months

✓ Passport photo

✓ Return or onward flight ticket

✓ Proof of financial support

✓ Accommodation details

✓ Active email address

✓ Contact telephone number

Some nationalities may also require additional immigration approval or an Indonesian sponsor before a visa can be issued.
